Capt. Bela/5c Brooks, born 30 Dec 1799 at North Haven, Connecticut, was baptised the following year at the Episcopal church.1,2 With his father and 9 siblings he removed circa 1814 to Butternuts, Otsego County, New York, where he lived for many years.3,4
He married (1) Annis Botsford, who died there in 1842.5,6 Their 1840 census household at Butternuts included one male under 5 (son Bela), one male 5-9 (son William), one male 20-29 (unidentified), one male 40-49 (Bela); and one female under 5 (dau.      He married (2) Sarah Chase Shaw, daughter of Samuel Shaw and Marcia (–?–), and widow of ____ Williams.5 The 1850 census recorded Bela (a. 49, farmer, r.e. $7000), Sarah (a. 37), six children ages 4-23, and farmer John Watkins (a. 22, b. England, who subsequently married Bela's daughter Emily) in their household at Morris8, where Sarah died 1 Aug 1855.5,9
He married (3), by 1860, Cynthia (–?–).10 In 1860 their Morris household included Bela (a. 60, farmer, r.e. $5,500, p.e. $2,000), Cynthia (a. "40"), and son William (a. 28, farmer). Next door was the family of Bela's brother William Riley Brooks.10
In 1862 Bela removed to Superior, Wisconsin, where he was one of the first settlers, a farmer11, and, despite his advanced age, a private in the town's Home Guard during the Sioux uprising of 1863.11
His wife Cynthia died 19 Sep 1866 (g.s.), a. 59.12 She is buried in Hillington Cemetery, Morris, while his previous wives are buried there in Harmony Cemetery.5,6

12 Apr 1873 he was named senior warden of the Episcopal church.11 He died on the 9th of November following.14

SAD DEATH OF BELA BROOKS. Mr. Bela Brooks, of Superior, and father of George Brooks, of this city, went out back of Superior on last Saturday afternoon to cut wood and in felling a tree it is supposed jumped back and fell into a fit where he was found by George and Mr. H.W. Shaw about ten o'clock that night — who, missing him at home had gone in search of him. When found it was discovered that his spine was broken — and to the enquiry of how it happened said he would tell them after awhile. He was taken to his home but on the way became unsconscious and expired about four o'clock on Sunday morning. Mr. Brooks was 73 years of age and was one of the first settlers to locate in Superior where he has ever since resided. — Saturday, 15 Nov 1873, Duluth Minnesotian.14

Initially buried in Nemadji Cemetery, Superior, his remains and those of other family members were moved, 28 Oct 1897, to Woodlawn Cemetery, Ambridge, of which his son George was then sexton.14
According to a published biography of his son George, Bela "was a captain in the New York State Mounted Militia for some years. In 1857 he visited Superior, Wis., and became so convinced of the prosperity in store for the city that he made quite extensive investments in real estate, and five years later returned to take up his residence there. He passed the last eleven years of his life in his new home in the West as a most exemplary citizen and prominent member of the Episcopal Church."4
