Dea. Isaac/4 Smith was born 17 Nov 1716 at Eastham, Massachusetts1, where he married, 9 Mar 1738, Mary Sparrow.2 With his parents they removed from Eastham, 1739/40, to Middletown, Connecticut.3 They settled initially in the parish of Middle Haddam, and united with that church 3 Apr 1741.2
"The parish of East Hampton is included in the last three miles granted to Middletown. No settlement was made on this tract of land until 1743, when 'Isaac Smith from the County of Barnstable, with five others from other localities, are mentioned as the first settlers.' … As other families from Eastham joined the settlement, it came to be called Easthamtown, and in October, 1746, the name [East Hampton] was 'decided upon.2'"
9 Apr 1743, Isaac Smith and others of East Hampton petitioned the General Assembly for liberty to organize a new church society. "The most part of us live five miles, and some of us ten miles away from the place of worship whereunto we do belong," they said, "and the roads are very difficult to travel, especially in the winter and fall."4 In 1752 the same petitioners reported that they had settled Rev. John Norton, and voted to build a meeting-house. Isaac Smith was clerk and treasurer of this society for a number of years.4 He was one of the deacons chosen at the organization of the church, 30 Nov 1748, served in the office 50 years, and was followed by his son Isaac, who served in the same office for 10.5
     His wife Mary died 17 Apr 17856, and he 29 Jul 1802, a. 85.7
