Martha/2 Leonard, born 15 May 1649 at Springfield, Massachusetts1, married, 8 Jun 1670, Sgt. Benjamin/1 Waite of Hatfield.1,2 "She together with her daughters Mary, Martha and Sarah, were in 1677 carried captives to Canada, and there her daughter Canada was b. The captives returned to Hat. in May, 1678," after Benjamin Waite and Stephen Jennings walked to Canada to procure their release.3 Benjamin was killed in battle with the French and Indians, 1 Mar 1704, the day following the Deerfield raid.3

Sgt. Benjamin/1 Waite, perhaps brother of Richard of Boston, was born as early as 1640, and was at Hadley, Massachusetts, 1663.1 Of Hatfield, where he settled permanently, in 1669.1 He married, 8 Jun 1670, Martha/2 Leonard of Springfield, daughter of John/1 Leonard and Sarah Heald.2,3 "She together with her daughters Mary, Martha and Sarah, were in 1677 carried captives to Canada, and there her daughter Canada was b." Rachel/2 Leonard was born 8 Nov 1665 at Springfield, Massachusetts1, where she married, 17 Mar 1684/85, Thomas Hancock, probably son of Nathaniel and Joan of Cambridge, Massachusetts.2
