Nathaniel/3p Brooks, born in Aug 1693 at Scituate, Massachusetts1, purchased lands of Michael Wanton, the Quaker teacher, 1717, and built upon them a house which still stands today, newly restored, on Main Street, Norwell. Deane described the location, in 1831, as "a half mile west of Hoop-pole hill, where the fifth Nathaniel Brooks now resides." Donald Mauch bought the dilapidated property in 1999 and completely restored it with the help of, and in close consultation with, preservation professionals and specialists.
In 1723 Nathaniel bought another property in South Scituate (now Norwell), about which descendant Steve Ivas wrote in Dec 1999, "My son, who is 11½, goes to school on a property (White Oak Plain) that Nathaniel Brooks the 2nd (of seven) purchased in 1723. It stayed in the family until the 1930s, when it was transferred to the Town by William Penn Brooks, president of the University of Massachusetts."3,4,5
Nathaniel married, 27 Nov 1717 at Scituate, Mary Taylor of S., daughter of William Taylor, with whom he had 9 children.6 William Taylor willed his York County, Maine farm, 1748, to his three daughters. The same year, Mary Brooks (w. of Nathl.), Wm. Brooks and Mercy Wright, spinster, all of Scituate, were deeded as heirs of our father William Taylor, who formerly lived in Arundel, Maine.7
Nathaniel Brooks died 14 Jan 1764 (g.s.), a. 708, and is buried in First (South) Parish Cemetery, Norwell (formerly South Scituate).9 Mary's death is unrecorded.
