James Hayward, 22, servant, and Judith Phippen, 16, servant, were among passengers certified from the London parish of Stepney on board the Planter, Nicholas Trerice, master, which sailed from London about 10 Apr and arrived at Boston 7 Jun 1635.1 Sewall's History of Woburn says the couple married during the voyage — which seems improbable, as servants would not have been free to marry on their own.2 But if the story is somehow correct, then James Hayward was deceased by 18 Jan 1643/44, when widower William/1 Simonds and "widow Judith Hayward" (nee Judith Phippen, as Sewall has it; simply "Judith Hayward" in the town record) married at Woburn, Massachusetts.3,4
William Simonds died at Woburn 7 Jun 1672.5 That same month, administration on his estate was granted to Judith, his relict widow, and to sons Caleb & William Simonds. Joseph Simonds, aged 19, chose John Wyman Sr. his guardian; Benjamin, aged 18, and James, aged 15, chose Francis Kendall guardian.6
Judith died at Woburn 3 Jan 1689. If she was the Planter passenger, her age was about 70.7
