Philip/1 Mattoon, his great-great grandson wrote about 1843, "an unmarried young man (who came I believe from Glasgow, in Scotland), was among 47 men at Marlboro, who, with others from Boston, were sent up [in 1676] under Capt. Wm. Turner to defend the inhabitants on Connecticut river from the invasions of the Indians."1 Next of Springfield, he married, 10 Sep 1677, Sarah Hawks of Hadley, daughter of John Hawks.2,1 Circa 1688 they removed to Deerfield1, where he died 5 Dec 1696.3 His widow married (2) Daniel/3 Belden of Deerfield.2

Sarah Hawks, born 29 Sep 1657 at Windsor, Connecticut1, was of Hadley, Massachusetts when she married, 10 Sep 1677 at Springfield, Philip/1 Mattoon of Springfield.2,3 About 1688 they removed to Deerfield, where he died 5 Dec 1696.4 She married (2), as his 2nd wife, Daniel/3 Belden of Deerfield, son of John/2 Belden,2 who died at Deerfield 14 Aug 1732.5

Child with Elizabeth Boltwood:

Eleazer/2 Mattoon, born 10 Mar 1689 at Deerfield, Massachusetts1, married Elizabeth Boltwood.2 They settled at Northfield3, then in 1733 removed to Amherst.3

Property5 Apr 1736, Northfield, MAThe original proprietors of Merry's Meadow were, Eleazar Mattoon, Daniel Shattuck, William Wright, Peter Evens, Joseph Petty, Jr., Robert Cooper, Nathaniel Mattoon, Moses Nash, Zachery Lawrence, Benoni Moore, Benjamin Palmer. The lots varied in size from five acres to fifteen acres. The first meeting of these proprietors for organization was held April 5, 1736.4
