Martin/4s Brooks, born 26 Feb 1741 at Warren, Massachusetts1, married Mary Hoar.2 They went to Nova Scotia, where, in the 1770 census return of Onslow, Lunenberg County, the family was enumerated as three Protestant Americans: one man, one woman, and one girl. Martin's brothers Phineas and Abner appear in the same county census at Horton and Onslow, as does the Onslow household of David Hoar, probably a kinsman.3
Stranded by the Revolutionary War, Martin and Mary returned to the United States at war's end and settled at Lincolnville, Maine. Martin Brooks was subsequently a grantee in the "Refugee Tract," a narrow strip of land running across four counties in Ohio, which grant their sons later occupied, as repatriation compensation.2,4
Mary died at Lincolnville in 1789.2 The 1790 census recorded the household of Martin Brooks, at Ducktrap, Maine, as two males over 16, three males under 16, and three females.5 Martin died at Lincolnville in 1825 [newspaper notice dated 6 Sep].6
