Jane Spinney was born in Maine circa 1825.1 Of Eliot, she married (int. 29 Jun 1846, Kittery) William Lewis of Kittery.1,2 The 1850 census recorded Jane Lewis (a. 25) and daughter Ann (a. 3) in the household of Jane's brother Samuel Spinney Jr. in Eliot, Maine.1 In 1860 Jane (a. 36, seamstress) and her daughter Ann A. (a. 12, student) were at Eliot with Jane's mother Nancy Spinney (a. 75).3 Jane's grandson later wrote that his "Lewis grandmother" (Jane Spinney) died at age 37, or around 1862. He described her husband William Lewis as "a seafarer who traded with the natives of the South Sea islands."4
