Parker/4s Grandy was born 15 Mar 1730, perhaps at Northfield, Massachusetts (but rec. Deerfield).1,2 He was at Chesterfield, New Hampshire, with his brother John, "as early as 1770," but his name disappears there before 1787.3 He had a wife Ruhamah (–?–).3
In 1781, Chesterfield was at the epicenter of the struggle between the nascent states of New Hampshire and Vermont for control of the "New Hampshire Grants." The story is recounted in considerable detail in the History of Chesterfield. In a memorial dated 25 Aug 1781, 80 men of Chesterfield, whose political structure was at the time firmly in the hands of the Vermont party, expressed their support for continued New Hampshire affiliation:

It is with the utmost Regret that we make mention of the Deplorable Situation into which we are fallen by the madness and folly of many of our People in these parts, in thinking to Revolt from the State of New Hampshire, in such an unjust and unrighteous a manner as has been attempted. … Nevertheless, we have the happiness to inform your Honors that on a motion made to know how many of the Inhabitants Disapprove of the measures taken, Eighty of the Inhabitants, namely — … | John Grandy, Jr. | Parker Grandy … [signatories]*

* It is unclear whether the Parker Grandy who signed was the elder of that name (s. Edmund) or his nephew (s. John).4

Sgt. Robert/4s Grandy was born 19 Jan 1732, perhaps at Northfield, Massachusetts (but rec. Deerfield).1 He married, by 1754, Bethiah Porter, daughter of Thomas Porter and Elizabeth (–?–).2 "His first five children's names were entered in the town records of Salisbury, Connecticut3. Four later children were attributed to them by town historians and circumstantial evidence."4
They followed his brother Edmund from Salisbury to Northfield, Massachusetts circa 17655, then removed to Chesterfield, New Hampshire circa 1772 [1770, Hist. Chesterfield].5 Robert signed (as Grandey) the Association Test (expressing Revolutionary loyalty) at Hinsdale, New Hampshire, 17766, and was a sergeant in Capt. Daniel Shattuck's company, Col. Samuel Ashley's New Hampshire regiment, the following year.7 His name is on a deed in Reading in 1779, and upon the town's incorporation in 1780 he was one of the first selectmen.8
His wife Bethiah may have died at Reading before 2 Nov 17839,10, when a Mr. Grandy there married Rebecca Hunter.8
Robert Grandy, with wife and one son (prob. Elijah), was recorded at Reading in the 1790 census. Also at Reading that year were the households of sons Bezaleel, Robert and Samuel.11 In 1800 his household included only himself and an unnamed wife, both over 45.12
Arguing against the identification of Robert as the "Mr. Grandy" of 1783, Bethiah and Robert are buried with a large Grandy cohort (but no Rebecca) in Brookdale Cemetery, Brookdale, New York.13

Census Detail:

1790Reading, VTRobert appears on the 1790 Census for Reading, Windsor, Vermont as Robert Grandy, 2-0-1, or Robert and his wife with one son living at home - most probably Elijah. Youngest daughter Bethiah had been married in June of that year. Sons Bezaleel (1-5-3), Robert (1-1-2) and Samuel (1-4-1) were also living in Reading.11
1800Reading, VTHe was still living in Reading at the time of the 1800 Census - showing a household with only himself and a wife, both being over 45 years of age.12
